Private jet charter and flights to Phnom Penh

Cambodia’s relaxed capital lies in the south of the country where the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers meet. Once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’ thanks to its French colonial architecture, today’s Phnom Penh is a little more of a mish-mash, with old colonial villas and traditional Khmer stupas sitting alongside a development of urban buildings. Phnom Penh is a fascinating place to spend a few days. The country’s wartime history is perhaps more evident around here than anywhere in Cambodia. Ten miles south of the capital lie the Killing Fields – a visit here is harrowing, but for those looking to understand Cambodia’s history, it’s a must. From 1975-1979 the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, killed almost two million Cambodian people, many of whom are buried in these mass graves. Back in town, visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum – a school that the Khmer Rouge turned into Security Prison 21, used to torture thousands of people before they were sent to the Killing Fields.

It’s important to realise that, though the horrific 1970s’ genocide will always be a big part of Phnom Penh’s identity, this isn’t a morbid city. In fact, it’s remarkably upbeat. The riverfront is the hub of the city, where the wide promenade plays host to street artists, cafés and the main tourist attractions. By night, visitors gather here to watch the sunset with a beer in hand. The Royal Palace is the city’s most impressive sight and its Khmer spires and ornate golden roofs dominate the southern riverfront. Within the palace complex you can also see the Silver Pagoda, named because of its glistening silver floor and housing a collection of gold Buddha statues. Just north of the palace is the elegant National Museum, offering a look back at Khmer artwork and artefacts.

Then there are Phnom Penh’s thriving markets, whose pièce de résistance is the Central Market. Built in 1937, this canary yellow Art Deco landmark has a huge domed design, keeping it cool even on the hottest days. It’s a fascinating place to browse the jewellery, clothing and fresh food on display. The buzzing Russian Market is also worth a visit for souvenirs and big-name brands.

Phnom Penh’s restaurant and bar scene is on the rise, with lively coffee shops that welcome visitors with a cheery ‘sous-dey’ (hello), established nightclubs and a host of sleek up-and-coming bars – particularly around the narrow lanes of Tonle Bassac. Vegetarians are well catered for in Phnom Penh, while some of the city’s most popular cuisines include Chinese, Spanish and Italian.
