Budapest was created in 1873 by the merger of three cities: Buda, Óbuda and Pest. It is now the administrative, cultural, scientific, economic, trade and transportation centre of Hungary. More lately, Budapest was the home of such world-class inventors as Kálmán Kandó, the father of electric railways, and János Irinyi, one of the early developers of matches. Hungary's two most celebrated composers, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, lived in Budapest, and Nobel Prize-winning Hungarian author Imre Kertész was born here.
Budapest is brimming with cultural establishments and the Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Museum, Hungarian State Opera House and National Széchényi Library are must-see institutions. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the central area of the city is where Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, Chain Bridge and Matthias Church can be found. The impressive Hungarian Parliament Building is located on Andrássy Avenue, the city's main shopping district, lined with cafes, restaurants, theatres and opulent boutiques.
Sightseeing in Budapest could not be easier with a range of transport options on offer. These include city tours on foot, by bicycle, Segway, Trabant car, TukTuk or bus, with floating buses showing Budapest by both land and water. For the more distant sights such as the Danube Bend, waterbuses, helicopters or light aircraft can be utilised to transport the visitor to this unforgettable area of outstanding beauty.
Back in the city and aimed at the children, Budapest can offer experiences such as the Palace of Miracles, Budapest Puppet Theatre, Hungarian Railway Museum, Budapest Zoo, or the Csopa Playbar to while away a few hours.
Budapest is home to the oldest metro line in continental Europe, the Millennium Underground Railway. Other underground features include around eighty geothermal springs and an extensive thermal water cave system beneath the city streets. The Pal-volgyi Caves can be explored in part by foot but, for the more intrepid, a tour is available where the adventurers climb and crawl their way through the city's longest cave system on a half-day caving expedition.
Known as the City of Spas, most of the hot baths in the city date back to the times of the Turkish occupation of Hungary. Nowadays, there are fifteen public thermal baths in Budapest, including one in the Hotel Gellért, and private thermal spas in the Ramada Plaza, Thermal Hotel Margitsziget and the Corinthia Royal. Some of the baths arrange special programmes and an example of this is Szechenyi Baths, which hosts regular party nights on Saturdays between February and December, with electronic music, drinks, food, and special lighting arrangements. Others, such as the Palatinus Bath on Margaret Island, have special pools for children, a wave-pool and water-chutes.
Returning to the city, the Budapest restaurant scene is impressive and eclectic. With some of the best formal dining establishments in Europe, the Hungarian capital also boasts amazing street food, the local dishes bursting with flavour. Try out Onyx, the only two Michelin-starred restaurant in Hungary. Costes Downtown and Borkonyha WineKitchen have a single Michelin star apiece and at the other end of the scale, with just four chairs, is Tökmag Vegan Street Food, vending some of the tastiest healthy food in the city. For breakfast, Törökméz is the place to go, handily placed near the Buda Castle. Whatever your preference, Budapest has a food outlet that will finely cater to your needs.
