In 2016 a brand new international and separate domestic terminal opened, bringing the airports operations in line with European standards. The new terminals are in preparation for the 2018 Russia World Cup, as the airport expects to see a dramatic increase in passenger traffic. Volgograd International Airport has two runways, the longest of which measures 3,280 meters. The airport has capacity for 42 aircraft on its apron and the runway is suitable for most aircraft types - excluding wide-bodies. The airport sits on a former military runway, and was used during the Battle of Stalingrad as a refuelling station for the German 6th Army. The airport has shops and restaurants that cater to a variety of personal preferences. There are also VIP facilities available at Volgograd International Airport, including a business lounge in both the domestic and international terminal and a VIP lounge in the VIP terminal (Terminal C).

The airport is open 24 hours, and is located 29km from the Volgograd Arena. Arrivals and departures at the airport are restricted, as with most Russian airports. It is important to note that airport employees do not speak English.
