DESTINATION GUIDE

John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)

John F. Kennedy Airport lies in Queens, 12 miles south east of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It is the busiest international passenger gateway in the United States, handling more international traffic than any other airport in North America. Dedicated as New York International Airport in 1948, the airport was more commonly known as Idlewild Airport (after the Idlewild Golf Course that it displaced) until 1963, when it was renamed in memory of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. JFK Airport was originally built with ten terminals, rather than the six it has today. It had ten terminals until the late 1990s, then nine until the early 2000s, followed by eight until 2011 and seven until May 2013. The airport has four runways and four helipads. Interestingly the 2004 film The Terminal, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is set at JFK International Airport. It is about a man who becomes trapped in the terminal when he is denied entry into the United States and at the same time cannot return to his native country due to a revolution.
